As I recall, people should get potassium iodine to protect their thyroids from radiation, have plastic and tape to be able to seal off a room, and be able to put three feet of mass between themselves and any radioactive particles that have blown in the area. This is besides having food, water, and sanitation for the period of time you need to stay shielded from the environment. I haven't read the book though.
