m.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_yFuVnL0us1. Lay cardboard over lawn. Can get free from stores. 2. Put a foot of mulch over cardboard. May get free from tree service, municipality, or other org. 3. Get enough sun. Prefer morning sun, 7-8 hours a day for temperate climates. 4. Water. Rain catchment and drip irrigation on a timer. Best to water in the morning before the sun. Puts water right where you want it. 5. Plants. Over plant and weed as needed-displaces possible weeds. Get perennials for your area, make a spot of compost in the mulch for them. 6. Weed. Pick weeds and put them in a pile in your garden so they compost back into the soil.
